Life rarely unfolds the way we expect.

There are seasons when the waters are calm and the horizon is clear. We feel confident in our direction and certain of our footing. But there are also moments when the winds rise without warning, waves crash against the sides of our carefully laid plans, and fear begins to drown out faith.

Most of us know what it feels like to be caught in a storm.

Perhaps it comes in the form of a difficult diagnosis, financial hardship, a strained relationship, the loss of a loved one, or simply the weight of uncertainty. In those moments, it can feel as though the storm is all we can see.

I have always been drawn to the account of the Savior calming the sea.

The disciples were experienced fishermen. They knew the water. They understood storms. Yet on this particular night, the tempest was so fierce that even they were afraid. As waves crashed into the boat, they feared for their lives.

Meanwhile, Jesus slept.

Can you imagine what that must have felt like?

The disciples were looking at the storm. Christ was resting through it.

When they finally woke Him, asking, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" He rose and spoke just a few words:

"Peace, be still."

And immediately, the wind ceased.

The sea became calm.

The storm that moments before had seemed overwhelming was suddenly silent.

What has always stood out to me is that the Savior did not merely calm the storm around the disciples—He invited them to find peace within it.

The storm was real.

The danger felt real.

The fear was real.

But so was the Savior.

That truth inspired this artwork, "The Calm in the Storm."

Rather than depicting the scene from a distance, this piece places the viewer in the position of the disciples. You stand in the boat. You see the waves. You feel the uncertainty. Yet your eyes are drawn to the Savior, standing amidst the chaos with complete authority and perfect peace.

His posture is calm.

His presence is steady.

The storm may rage, but it does not control Him.

I believe that is one of the most powerful lessons Christ teaches us. Faith does not mean we will never experience storms. It means we know Who stands with us when they come.

The Savior never promised a life free from hardship. He promised His presence. He promised His strength. He promised that through Him, we can find peace even when the winds around us have not yet ceased.

For me, this artwork is a reminder that our circumstances do not determine our hope.

When life feels overwhelming, when answers seem distant, and when the future feels uncertain, we can choose where we place our focus.

We can look at the waves.

Or we can look to the Savior.

"The Calm in the Storm" is an invitation to remember that the same Christ who commanded the sea still speaks peace into troubled hearts today.

And sometimes, the greatest miracle is not that the storm ends immediately.

Sometimes the miracle is discovering that Christ has been in the boat with us all along.
